Visiting Professor Richard Mitchell from Otago, New Zealand
Dr Richard Mitchell is a leading expert in wine and food tourism from the University of Otago, New Zealand. He is ‘Visiting Professor’ at RMS between August 2007 and February 2008, where most of his work will be undertaken in association with the Chair in Champagne Management. The primary focus of his time at RMS is to undertake research into English-speaking visitors and migrants to the Champagne region to establish the meanings that they place on la Champagne, le champagne and some champagne brands. This project will be qualitative in nature, gathering in-depth information from a relatively small number of respondents. It will explore not only their experiences while here in Champagne, but also their experiences of champagne when at home. Dr Mitchell is also working with Dr Steve Charters (Chair in Champagne Management) on the development of several projects on wine tourism in Champagne and across Europe. During his time at RMS he also plans to publish a number of academic papers on wine tourism, food as a tourism product in France, the tourism experience (in Paris), the intellectual property of place (including examples from Champagne) (published late 2007), farmers’ markets (published early 2008) and a text book on wine marketing (released September 2007).

Futur leaders du Champagne
The Chair of Champagne Management is delighted to announce the start of its first teaching programme, designed to aid young members of the champagne profession. It includes both and would be intended to vignerons and executives from the maisons, and comprises a series of lectures and workshops on key business themes, with a focus on the development of a business, marketing or export plan for a wine business. The teaching programme uses coaches who work with students on an individual basis and help them develop their plan. Use is also made of a great many expert speakers with experience in champagne and other related fields to give the students the widest possible exposure to new and stimulating ideas.
The programme is designed to offer the opportunity to reflect on the future of champagne and explore its place in the changing international market for wine.

He has a wide range of research interests, but his primary focus is in the area of wine and food tourism. His other research interests include:
- Wine marketing and consumer behaviour
- Rural tourism - particularly motivations for visiting rural environments (e.g. rural landscapes and the romantic notion of rural life).
- Perceptions of place
Whilst he is with us Richard will – naturally – be focusing primarily on the development of wine tourism in the Champagne region.
